The Institute for Pulsed Power and Microwave Technology at a Glance

The Institute for Pulsed Power and Microwave Technology (IHM) is doing research and development as well as education and technology transfer in the areas of pulsed power and high-power microwave technologies.

We are focusing on:

  • Fundamental research
    • electron beam physics and beam target interactions
    • fretting (wear resistance of materials)
    • generation, transmission and conversion of high electromagnetic fields at millimeter wave frequencies
    • plasma-wall interaction
  • Application of the results
    • to generate pulsed electron beams with large diameters and sufficient beam energies
    • to improve the wear resistance and the liquid metal corrosion of steels
    • to electroporate biomasses and to stimulate biological cells to supply Megawatt power levels for electron-cyclotron resonance heating and control
    • to apply high-power microwaves to materials by developing large-scale microwave ovens and specific microwave tools
    • to predict the impact of transients on the erosion and lifetime of wall materials of future fusion reactors

ISP
2018 ISP PhD Workshop on Pulsed Power

organized by IHM was a great success. Over 40 participants from 6 countries met at KIT from 6th to 7th December to present their research and discuss future pulsed power projects. The event was

sponsored by the International Society on Pulsed Power Applications e.V. (ISP), a society dedicated to the advancement of pulsed power technologies towards industrial applications and the promotion of young scientists in the field of pulsed power. We would like to thank all participants for their oral and poster presentations and their valuable contributions in the discussions.

Picture of the month

One of our new semiconductor-based Marx generators currently under development made it as "Picture of the Month" into the newspaper "Badische Neuste Nachrichten"!

Using nearly 900 individual power semiconductor switches and 150 microprocessors, it is designed to generate an arbitrary output voltage of up to 120kV at 600A pulsed current. The device, when finished, will be used as driving pulse power source for our pulsed electron beam device (GESA).
